The age old question… “Does doing your cardio fasted burn more calories?” The answer Nope. That was easy! “Well, does it burn more fat?” Yes - it actually does.
So that means we should do fasted cardio, right?! We all wanna burn more fat!
Not quite…
Burning fat and losing fat are not the same thing, (unfortunately).
The truth is…
Your body is burning fat around the clock. Even when you sleep.
It’s also storing fat, too. Even when you sleep.
And no I’m not talking about the fat storage from having carbs before bed. That sh*t doesn’t matter.
At the end of the day your net fat balance - or the amount of fat you have on your body - comes down to this equation:
Fat stored - fat burnt.
And the only way to tip this in favour of burning more fat than you store is by consuming fewer calories than you burn.
Here’s what is going to happen, in a graph format:
If you do your cardio fasted, you’ll burn more fat during cardio.
But then the body compensates by burning less fat later.
There’s no magical way of “tricking” your body or avoiding the law of thermodynamics, unfortunately.
What does the research say?
In this 2014 study conducted by two industry GOATS Alan Aragon and Brad Schonfeld:
21 participants performed 1 hour of either fasted or fed cardio over 4 weeks…
The difference between the two groups in terms of body composition was…
Nada. Zilch.
❌ Body mass.
❌ BMI.
❌ Body fat percentage.
❌ Waist circumference.
❌ Fat mass.
❌ Fat-free mass.
There was “no significant difference” in any of the above.
So what’s the takeaway from this?
F*ck cardio.
Just kidding.
If you’re going to use cardio for your health or to burn a few extra calories that’s awesome.
Just don’t feel as if you HAVE to do it fasted.
